1903 J E Stevens Funny Clown Mechanical Bank Wooden Crate

1903 J E Stevens Funny Clown Mechanical Bank Wooden Crate

This is the original wooden crate which held the J. & E. Stevens Co. cast iron mechanical bank known as the "Funny Clown", a.k.a "Clown on Globe". This auction is for the box only; although a photo of the actual bank is shown below. There is no lid.

The box is hardwood with pine bottom. The corners were machine dovetailed, while the bottom was nailed into place. The front panel was stamped embossed with the catalog number, bank name, manufacturer name and address, and operation instructions. Raised slots were cut into the top edges to fit into grooves on the underside of the lid. The right slot and half of the rear slot are slivered off and not present. The front top edge did not originally have a slot.

The bank in its original crate was originally available in 1903. It sold for 85 cents.
